JUNE 2021

Bean Bean Bean

I’m sure we all know that beans are a great source of vegetables, sometimes it’s in our everyday meals, but in this case, with Bean bean bean, beans actual help save many lives! In the Bean bean bean service event, members visit the website beanbeanbean.com and start collecting beans by answering various amount of categorized questions. Loara Key Club released this service event on June 4th and it was due on June 25th. For every 100 beans that the member collected, they would receive 1 hour of service, but Loara Key Club placed a max of 8 hours meaning members were able to collect up to 800 beans. I personally find Bean bean bean as one of the service events that are efficient and is very calming. Whenever I felt bored, I was able to fulfill my time with productivity and work on collecting beans for Bean bean bean. Now, you must be wondering, “how do some virtual beans save lives?” Well, on the website, they talk about the functions of how for every bean that we collect, it earns them a little bit of money in which they use to donate to charities that fund full meals. With the easy system of collecting plentiful amounts of beans, get collecting and fulfill the many starving tummies!

Charity Miles

Hi, I’m Jazmin Gonzalez, Loara key club’s Bulletin Editor. This month there were many service events that key club members can participate in. One of them being Charity Mile, which is an app where you get hours for taking walks/runs. You can also choose which charity you would like to donate to. The Charity I chose was ASPCA, which is a charity that helps animals find a new home. In my opinion this service event is the easiest because it does not take much time and you can multitask. Whenever I was shopping or outside, I would use this app to track my steps. I would also wake up early in the morning to go for runs. This app not only helped me get hours but also helped me see how much I walk throughout the day. I really liked this app because there are many charities you can help and all you have to do is walk or run.

Free Rice

The month of June provided numerous community service opportunities for Loara Key Clubbers to participate. Of these service events, Key Club members had the chance to play Freerice. Freerice and Freerice.com is a service app or website that has users answer questions for the chance to save and change lives around the world. In this app, students have the selection of multiple categories or difficulties. These categories include sciences, current events, languages, mathematics, history, and much more! This service app donates ten grains of rice to the World Food Programme for every answer the user gets right. This service event began on June 2 and ended on June 25. Members had the opportunity to gain 30 minutes of community service for every 300 grains of rice gained with a maximum amount of hours available being 10 hours. Personally, I always enjoy when clubs use this application to provide service opportunities because of its simple yet enjoyable usage.

Rice Race

Rice Race: the almost knockoff version of the classic Flappy Bird, except it’s dedicated to service. This app was a thrill to play, trying to get that penguin to dodge every obstacle while still obtaining rice grains. After hearing my friend play this game in order to gain community hours, I was motivated to beat her high score and set my own goals for the game. While aiming to achieve the maximum hours, I had fun trying to beat my friend’s highscore and competing with other friends who also played the game. The best part is the fact that I am contributing to hunger each time I get a rice grain. I’d love for this service event to return, so that I can play this game and get even better scores. I admit though, it was frustrating when I would die with a good score, but that's what made this game more enjoyable and addictive. My highest score was 106 :D

June DCM/OTC

OTC:
This was the first OTC for this term and I was pretty nervous. We all met online and went over each other's divisions and introduced ourselves. It was exciting to see other people from other states interact and get to know each other. We were then put into the first session of breakout rooms. As treasurer, I had decided to join the ‘Treasurer’ for OTC and learned many important rules and regulations about becoming treasurer. It was a very informative training and I had made sure to take notes on important comments that were made in order to fulfill my duty as one. Next, after an hour, we went back to the main room and took our lunch break. During our lunch break the division leaders were reading out love boxes where it was a form made in order to send a message to a certain person anonymously. It was interesting hearing the comments people made. After reading love boxes, we went into the second session of breakout rooms. I had joined the ‘Fundraiser’ room. The reason for it was to understand the process of handling tax ID and other important information and being able to reach out to ASB in order to handle and care for the money for it, legally. After OTC, I felt much more comfortable about knowing what to do and how to handle it and being able to handle the position as treasurer.

June DCM:
For this month, I attended the June DCM. Very much like the other virtual DCMs from previous months ago, awards were presented and breakout rooms were created. It was a very nice moment to be able to connect and see the Key Club members during the summer.  After school had ended, I was afraid that it would be harder for me to socialize and see my friends. Luckily for me, the June DCM allows me to see my friends and have a brief moment of socializing with my peers and fellow Key Club members.  The DCM did not took up much of my time but it left me eagerly waiting for the upcoming month to attend July’s DCM. During the DCM, Christina introduced the Keyclub members to new June service projects. One of them being a google chrome extension named OceanHero. We are then allow to use the extension's search function to gain hours , with a ten hour maximum limit. The DCM also announced a social event where members from D30N, D16W, D30S, and D16E are able to gather and meet. This was especially exciting to hear since it is a great opportunity to meet new people and create friendships with fellow key club members from different districts.

Everyone was put into random break-out rooms and got to introduce themselves. After we got to meet amazing people from each group rap and at the end everyone had to vote. There was also a glovebox where people got to send messages to their friends and they would get read aloud. This month's Joint Social was really fun!!! And I can't wait for upcoming events!
