Pause For

The Pause For event was successful in personally encouraging me to study for my AP exams. It’s tough to study without having the need to look at your phone and check social media, but thanks to Pause For I was less distracted while also giving back to my community. I often chose to help with hunger, trees, and occasionally help puppies.  At times I would pause for three hours to ensure I was studying during those times. I think implementing the Pause For event was a good idea because of the testing season. Specifically, this event was announced on April 30, and it ended May 28th. Students were instructed to download the Pause For app on the app store and select a time to stop using their phone. If a member accessed their phone while being on pause, then the pause would be unsuccessful and no service hours would be earned. This could range from ten minutes to an hour. Usually, I paused for intervals of either thirty minutes or an hour.

Charity Miles

Over the month of May, Loara Key Club provided an array of community service opportunities to the student club members at Loara High School. Of these service events, one event that members had available to them was Charity Miles. Charity Miles is an app that tracks the user’s number of miles exercise. The app uses the phone’s built in tracking system in order to accurately track the number of miles exercised. For example, those using an iPhone are tracked through the Health app if users enable it. The app then donates to a charity of the user’s choice depending on the amount of miles ran and if you have a sponsor. For every half a mile exercised by the user, they received one hour of community service. Members could earn up to twenty hours of community service because the maximum amount of miles one could run was limited to ten miles. Members then submitted a screenshot of the miles exercised for the month of May to the Loara Key Club account’s linktree to earn hours. This service event lasted until May 26.

Ekoru

Ekoru was a service event with Key Club and LEOs! Ekoru is a search engine that members would download as a Google Chrome Extension. Over time, you are able to collect more points (plastic bottles) as a way to showcase how much you are helping the ocean. Not only does Ekoru think about the plastic pollution in the oceans but it focuses on carbon emissions too. A fun system that the search engine also includes is a badge system. Every time you reach a certain amount of bottles cleaned, you level up. The badges are given as follows: seal, starfish, sea otter, seagull, sea lion, pelican, penguin, turtle, stingray, walrus, hammerhead, dugong, dolphin, great white, orca, beluga whale, and whale.

May General Meeting

On May 5th, Loara Key Club held its first ever meeting for the new 2021-22 term. This meeting represented a strong start and theme for a bright upcoming year led by our hardworking board. In order to encourage more members to attend this meeting our board made visuals prior, so that we could advertise this meeting to its fullest extent.  Initially as I joined the meeting I was warmly welcomed by the rest of our board, music played as we waited with the mix of lighthearted conversations and laughter the overall atmosphere was comfortable. Held on Google Meets after school, the meeting started at 12:10 PM with about 60-80 members in the end. Our Key Club President Trina Thai, started the meeting like usual with the pledge and reminders. I definitely noticed how hard Trina worked and prepared for this meeting to go smoothly. She did a great job leading her first key club meeting and I’m proud to have such a passionate president to work with for this upcoming term. The agenda consisted of reminders and the introduction of new service opportunities which included Charity Miles, Pause For and lastly a collaboration with LEOS Club for Ekoru! Overall, I consider this meeting as productive and successful. This meeting made me excited for what’s to come for Loara Key Club and made me thrilled about a possible future where we get to hold an in-person meeting and connect with my board members beyond just the screen.

May DCM

This month we had a DCM on May 22nd from 3 to 5pm. It was the first time I’ve ever attended a meeting with such a big number of people including the general members. As the meeting started, Christina called to order. After that, we all had to do a pledge of allegiance and key club pledge. The Lieutenant Governor, Christina, then introduced the invited guests, old businesses and so much more new businesses. Out of all of the new businesses that she introduced, I’m most interested in the D30S June Dcm and May Service Week. After all the announcements, we then got to choose to join four different breakout rooms. Unfortunately, I got my covid vaccine the day before so I was having a fever, which made me too tired to join and participate in the Social&Game room that I planned to. That being the case, I joined the quiet room for some space and also studied for the finals. The person in charge of the breakroom, Michelle played a nice playlist of lofi songs which was very helpful for me to study and relax. Other than that, the room was pretty quiet as it’s supposed to be.
